The Health of Nations:

Treating and Preventing Disease

Employee Wellness in Our Portfolio

We work to improve the health and well-being of portfolio company employees through our Wellness Works program and Worker Safety effort. Our Co-CEO, Henry Kravis, along with three CEOs from our portfolio companies participate in the American Heart Association CEO Roundtable.

Impacting Employee Health: Wellness Works

Nearly half of the individuals employed by our private equity portfolio companies reside in the United States, where cancer, heart disease, and stroke-related health issues cause illness, shorten productive lives, and consume a large portion of employer and employee medical costs. In many cases, these diseases and their related health challenges can be avoided or reduced through healthier living and early diagnosis.

Wellness Works, an incentivized, workplace-based, wellness initiative, was designed to engage employees on their biometric health scores and provided resources to help them address risk factors for cancer and cardiovascular health, including smoking, obesity, hypertension, and diabetes. It was based on the premise that employees who know their key health indicators are able to make better decisions for their health and ultimately improve their well-being.

This program also supported a community of best practice sharing between engaged portfolio companies. Wellness Works was launched in 2011 with the guidance of the American Heart Association (AHA). Between 2011 and 2015, the program engaged more than 250,000 employees at 10 companies.

A Platform for Global Worker Safety

Our portfolio companies have a wide range of needs and opportunities in health and safety management. With this in mind, in 2015, we launched a global effort built on a Worker Safety Guide that we developed and distributed in partnership with Environmental Resources Management, a global provider of environmental, health, safety, risk, and social consulting services. The handbook illustrates the foundational elements of an effective management system and is designed to highlight opportunities for continuous improvement in health and safety performance.
